Ty (pronounced like “Dee”) Nguyen is a Registered Social Worker, Psychotherapist who provides counselling services to individuals ages 16 and older at her practice, Parayou. She is currently accepting clients for phone, video conferencing and walk-and-talk counselling.

Ty works with individuals with diverse backgrounds and complex histories in the areas of trauma, mental health, anger and stress management, grief, relationships, pain/illness management, understanding the self, and wholistic well-being. She practices from a client-centered, trauma-informed and strengths-based perspective to encourage people’s self-determination and resilience. She also works from an anti-oppressive lens utilizing therapeutic techniques, such as cognitive-behavioural, mindfulness-based, polyvagal, and solution-focused brief therapy.

Born in Chatham, Ontario to Vietnamese refugee parents, Ty is a Vietnamese-Canadian who navigates living between collectivist and individualist cultures. Ty’s blended identity enables her to understand the nuances of how identity influences lived experiences and health. She practices cultural humility when holding space for and connecting with people, as they explore ways to heal, grow and develop a renewed sense of hope.

Ty earned her BA at Brock University, her BSW at Western University, and her MSW at Wilfrid Laurier University. Throughout her career and education, Ty gained experience working in the following areas: individual counselling, community healthcare, educational settings, justice system, member of provincial parliament office, an Indigenous community outreach organization, French community organizations, international social work, intensive mental health treatment for youth, and adventure-based settings.

Ty is Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Mental Health Counselling provider for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients. If you have extended health benefits, review your plan as most insurance providers cover sessions with an MSW, RSW designation. If you do not have extended health benefits, working with a Registered Social Worker means that you might be able to claim sessions as part of your medical expenses.
